 SPP adds Community Announcements
We have added a Community Announcements section to the site to list all the events and programs that are being offered by community organizations involved in corporate social responsibility and sustainability issues. If you have something to submit, please email that to info@sppcalgary.org. To check it out, go to: Community Announcements.
 Bill Gates into Farming
The billionaire Bill Gates pledged $306M in grants to help develop farming in poor countries, aimed at ending extreme poverty. To read more about it, go to: CNN article.
 Hard Times for Plastics
Many common household products contain compounds that could be affecting our health. Mountain Equipment Coop has decided to stop selling the popular Nalgene bottles due to health concerns with plastic as well. Links of the Month
• United Nations Global Compact (www.unglobalcompact.org) is a framework for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption.
• Kiva (www.kiva.org) lets you connect with and loan money to unique small businesses in the developing world. By choosing a business on Kiva.org, you can "sponsor a business" and help the world's working poor make great strides towards economic independence. Throughout the course of the loan (usually 6-12 months), you can receive email journal updates from the business you've sponsored. As loans are repaid, you get your loan money back.
