OPPORTUNITY: Get profiled to over 100 of Calgary's progressive business community members!

Starting in September, the SPP will be spotlighting a local business and what they are doing to better the livelihoods of their employees. We are inviting any business to tell us your story and have it broadcast to over 100 members of the SPP mailing list, people who represent the progressive business community in Calgary. All you have to do is send us an email indicating your interest in being spotlighted and we will take care of the rest.

What is flex-time?

With the increasing challenges of finding good employees and retaining them, salary is only one of the attractions to a workplace environment. Flexible scheduling has become an increasing trend in making a vibrant workplace. Flex-time is where an employer allows people to deviate from the regular work schedule to accommodate for other life issues, like taking care of children or elders, or other personal needs. Providing this type of flexibility provides employees with the ability to do their job well and signals to them that their employer values a balance between work and personal life. Links of the Month

Flick Off (www.flickoff.org) is Canadian marketing campaign aimed at reducing people's energy consumption by asking people to 'flick' off the lights. It's a play on a four-letter F-word that hopes to get people's attention focused on global warming.
Canadian Community Economic Development Network (www.ccednet-rcdec.ca/en/pages/home.asp) - CED can be defined as action by people locally to create economic opportunities and enhance social conditions in their communities on a sustainable and inclusive basis, particularly with those who are most disadvantaged. CED is about getting people to make decisions with the environment and social outcomes in mind, not just the economic outcomes. This is an emerging concept that will receive increasing attention as society tries to deal with the challenges our economic system has influenced such as poverty.
