The Social Purchasing Portal (SPP) is a listing of socially progressive businesses in Calgary. Our directory highlights businesses engaged in innovative workplace practices in the Calgary community, and encourages social purchasing. We are a program of Momentum.
The Social Purchasing Portal concept is, at its core, a way for communities to engage the purchasing power of the private sector to promote social outcomes and create social value.
The Social Purchasing Portal (SPP) is an innovative model that links and facilitates connections between sectors. It supports communities in their efforts to address issues such as poverty, unemployment, and development of the local economy.
Each SPP is unique. The makeup and program delivery model of an SPP is determined by local factors including business markets and trends, local geography and social conditions, and potential partners.
The SPP is a unique local networking model because it creates blended value. By linking the needs and goals of the business and social sectors in a local community it leads to both social and economic benefits.
The Social Purchasing Portal Network is a voluntary affiliation of the organizations that operate a local SPP. The SPP Network is a means for the individual sites to share information, best practices, and referrals.
Momentum is a Community Economic Development (CED) organization that offers hope and opportunity to people living in poverty. Momentum is a not-for-profit society that has been partnering with low-income Calgarians to develop their productive futures since 1991.

About Momentum
Momentum operates Community Economic Development (CED) programs in four key areas: business development, financial literacy, skills training, and technology access.
Business Development
Low-income Calgarians start and operate their own small businesses. Support includes small business training, peer support and networking, one-on-one business coaching through volunteers, and a youth entrepreneurship program.
Entrepreneurs can access financing through a micro business loan fund. Business loans are also available to entrepreneurs with disabilities. Financial Literacy
Participants in low-income situations are managing their money and saving. A savings incentive program provides an opportunity for adults and youth to save for their education, a home, to start a business, buy tools for work, or to send their kids to college.
People who are working, yet at risk of being homeless, are finding a place to call home through our security deposit loans. Women surviving domestic violence are taking control of their finances as they gain money management skills. Skills Enhancement Training
Immigrant persons prepare to become apprentices in various trades such as plumbing, welding, carpentry, and pipefitting so that they can obtain rewarding employment. Loans for tools are also available so that participants can buy the necessary tools for a trade.
Technology Access
Individuals who cannot afford a computer in their home can access our computer lab. People learn essential computer skills and gain access to job opportunities found only on the Internet.
Community Connections
Momentum programs and services are delivered in communities across Calgary. Momentum recognizes the value of connecting with communities of interest and geographic communities to disseminate our knowledge and to help foster healthy communities. Neighbourhoods are encouraged and supported in initiating CED projects to address local issues.
